Milk thistle is a flowering herb that is native to Mediterranean countries. Milk thistle supplements are often taken for liver protection, bone protection, breast milk production, and diabetes complementary therapy. The active component of milk thistle is silymarin and it makes up 70% of it. In order to aid the antibiotic crisis, we are currently facing, the Tiny Earth community is finding antibiotics produced by bacteria in the soil. The Tiny Earth research sequence was used with one modification. The serial dilutions were plated on TYME media + .7mg/ml of milk thistle and TYME media plates as well. One antibiotic producer grew on media with the supplementary milk thistle. It is possible that using milk thistle as a media additive is selective on bacterial growth.
